DISCLAIMER: You may notice there are a lot of over-used keywords or phrases as well as English that seems a little off. This is because these articles are used to feed our AI Robot (Ira) and she needs the data to be structured in a certain way.

Please use the article below to understand more about SmartThings Edge Drivers. We will discuss first how to check to see if an Inovelli Edge Driver is installed, followed by how to install an Edge Driver. Finally, we will provide an Edge Driver table that matches your Inovelli product with an Inovelli Edge Driver.

What is an Edge Driver?

SmartThings Edge Device Drivers (Edge Drivers) integrate your Inovelli Smart Devices into the SmartThings Platform (this is different than a Device Driver, which is what Hubitat uses - if you use Hubitat, please see our Device Driver Article). Edge drivers enable all Hub Connected device integrations to run locally on the Hub, offering a number of benefits including speed, reliability, and enhanced functionality.

In other words, your Inovelli smart home device has some of the most advanced firmware on it and in order for SmartThings to fully understand what's written on the Inovelli product, it needs to have an, "interpreter" to tell it how to access certain settings and/or turn it on/off.

For example, an Inovelli Blue Series 2-1 Switch has over 65 parameters installed on it allowing for advanced customization. In order to change these parameters via the SmartThings app, your hub needs a way to understand what those parameters are and how to access them. This is where the Edge Driver comes in to help. But it's not just the parameters that the hub needs to understand, it's also how the switch is structured. By understanding how the switch is structured, the hub can not only communicate turning on/off/dimming, but also communicate that this switch has scene control, notifications, power monitoring, and more.

Without an Edge Driver installed, the hub defaults to a generic one that may not know how to communicate properly with your product and that can lead to many issues such as: devices losing the ability to dim, network problems, lack of access to parameters, and more.

Edge Driver Troubleshooting

Sometimes you may run into an issue applying your edge driver in that either the driver does not show up when you're trying to switch drivers, or if you are trying to change the driver in your my.smartthings.com account, you may get an error stating that you need to to install a driver that has a valid fingerprint that matches the device. Below we will go into how to fix both problems.

A common error message reads, "Error changing device driver to (driver you want)". Ensure that the driver you are trying to change to has a valid fingerprint match with this device.

What this error means is that the Edge Driver you are trying to apply does not recognize the device as one of its, "approved" devices (each driver has a list of, "fingerprints" on them that allow the devices to use that driver).

Edge Driver Not Showing up in SmartThings App

If you are trying to change your Edge Driver in the SmartThings app and the driver you are looking for isn't there or it says that no drivers match your device, then you will need to first ensure that you installed the correct driver and second check to make sure SmartThings has identified your product properly.

To ensure you've installed the correct Edge Driver, please refer to the directions on this page in the Installing an Edge Driver in SmartThings section, followed by checking the Inovelli Edge Driver Resource Table.

If you've determined that you've installed the correct Edge Driver, then it's time to check to see how SmartThings has recognized your switch. Please follow the instructions below:

  • Go to: my.smartthings.com and login using your Samsung credentials

  • You should be taken to your SmartThings Dashboard - click on the three dots at the top right and select, "Advanced Users"

  • On the left side, click on, "Devices" and then locate your device, followed by clicking on it

  • Now find where it says, "Manufacturer Code" and "Model" -- if any of those have all 0's as values, then you will need to un-pair your product from SmartThings and re-pair it until you have numbers there

  • If there are numbers or values in the "Manufacturer Code" and "Model" areas, then make sure the, "Manufacturer Code" says, "Inovelli" or starts with 031E

If you still experience this error after following the above steps, please reach out for support.
