Please use the article below to understand more about setting up color Notifications in the Amazon Alexa App. We will discuss first how to generically setup a notification and then follow up with specific examples that our community members have asked for.
Color Notification Overview
Color notifications are used when you want to have a visual cue on your LED bar notify you of a certain event. A few examples would be:
LED changes purple if your garage door is left open past 9pm
LED Bar changes red if your front door is unlocked
LED Bar changes orange if a door is opened at night time
These notifications are accomplished by setting up Automations within the Amazon Alexa App.
Setting Up Color Notifications on Amazon Echo
There are lots of use cases for using the LED Bar (Light Strip) as a notification tool inside your house. From notifying you if the garage door is left open past 9pm, to understanding the Armed status of your Home Monitoring system, color notifications are a great way to quickly see whatever you're monitoring.
Below we'll setup a color notification that will notify you on your LED Bar if your smart lock is unlocked.
Before we get started, it's important to make sure you named the LED Bar device that showed up when you initially paired your switch something you'll remember because you'll be using it in the routine below. If you are unsure what we mean by this, please see the pictures below. If you already know what your LED Bar device is named, please move on to Step 2.
White Series Switches
Initial Pairing
Device Page
open up your Alexa app, click on the, "More" tab at the bottom and then select, "Routines"
On the Routines page, click on the, "+" at the top right of the screen to create a new routine. We will first create a routine that turns the smart bulb on when the switch is turned on.
Under where it says, "When", click on, "Add an event"
Next, click on, "Smart Home"
Find your smart lock and click on it
Click on, "Unlocked"
Next, under, "Alexa Will", click on, "Add an action"
Click on, "Smart Home"
Click on, "Lights"
Select your switch's LED Bar device (we've named it, "Office Switch LED Bar", but you may have named it something different)
Click on, "Power" and then select, "On". Then click on, "Brightness", followed by, "Set Brightness" and set the level of brightness you'd like the LED Bar to be. Finally, click on, "Set Color" and then click on the grey circle next to the word, "Select" to select the color you want the LED Bar to be. In this example, we will turn the LED Bar red. When completed, click, "Next".
Rename the routine if you'd like, then click, "Save" at the bottom
Test out your notification by unlocking your smart lock (if it is already unlocked, please lock it and then unlock it to test). Your LED Bar should light up red. To clear it, double-tap the favorites button on your switch (top-right corner of the switch).
Or you can set up another routine to clear the notification when the door is locked (or have it change to a different color). Simply follow Steps 3-13, but make the following changes: In Step 7, select, "Locked". In Step 12, if you'd like the notification to be cleared, only select, "Power" and underneath, "Power", select, "Off" and if you'd like the notification to change a different color when the switch is locked, select all the same settings, but change the color to whatever color you'd like.
