Setup Instructions Overview
This is the digital manual for the Inovelli Bypass (VBP01). The bypass is designed to help a smart switch operate in a non-neutral setup and to reduce flickering or glowing with certain low-wattage LED or CFL bulbs.
Navigating the Instructions
Please click on any of the sections in the Table of Contents to get started. We recommend working your way down as it follows an intentional flow that is user friendly and hub/gateway specific. As always, any questions, please see the Additional Resources links section or submit a ticket, we’re happy to help.
About Your Bypass
Your bypass is a simple device that is meant to help your switch work in a non-neutral setup as well as stop flickering lights in either neutral or non-neutral situations.
In the following sections, we’ll explain why the bypass is helpful for flickering lights
and required for a non-neutral setup.
Non-Neutral Setups
In a non-neutral setup, smart switches require a small amount of power to run their internal electronics, which they draw by passing a trickle current through the connected light bulb. A bypass, installed at the light fixture, provides an alternative low-resistance path for the trickle current, ensuring the switch stays powered without affecting the bulbs.
Flickering Bulbs
A bypass can help with bulb flickering in both neutral and non-neutral setups by providing a stable, low-resistance path for small currents that might otherwise flow through the bulb and cause instability. This ensures consistent power delivery to the smart switch’s electronics without interfering with the bulb’s operation, eliminating flickering or glowing issues, especially with low-wattage LEDs or CFLs.
Wiring Your Bypass
Do not attempt to install these switches if you are unfamiliar with electrical as serious injury can occur.
The bypass is installed in parallel with your light bulb (at the light fixture). Please read through the next few sections to understand the warnings associated with wiring your bypass and the procedure for installation.
Safety Reminder
Consult a qualified electrician if necessary as we are unable to give wiring advice outside of schematics.
If you are unsure how electrical circuits work, please do not try installing this device. As exciting as it is to have a smart switch installed, it can be dangerous and even life-threatening if you do not install it correctly. Improper installation will void the product’s warranty.
Please read through the warnings below before installing your switch. We can’t stress enough how dangerous installation can be if you don’t know what you’re doing.

Caution - Please Read: This device (VBP01) is intended for installation in accordance with the National Electric Code and local regulations in the United States, or the Canadian Electrical Code and local regulations in Canada. If you are unsure or uncomfortable about performing this installation consult a qualified electrician. This product is made for indoor use only and is not designed or approved for use on power lines other than 120-277V AC, 50/60Hz, single phase. Attempting to use this VBP01 on non-approved power lines may have hazardous consequences.
Other Warnings: Risk of Fire, Electrical Shock & Burns
Recommended Installation Practices: Use only indoors or in an outdoor rated box. Turn off the circuit breaker. Installing this bypass with the power on will expose you to dangerous voltages. Connect only copper or copper-clad wire to the bypass.
Connecting the bypass to an inductive load, such as a fan or transformer, could cause damage to the bypass, the load bearing device, or both.
This bypass is only meant for resistive loads, such as LED or CFL bulbs.
To install your bypass (VBP01), you’ll need to identify the following two wires:
Line: Usually black and can also be called the, “hot” or “live” and carries 120-277V AC electricity into the electrical box
Neutral: Usually white and is commonly daisy chained from box to box, usually appearing as a white wire bundle.
If you are having difficulties identifying wires, please consult an electrician.
Installation
Your bypass is installed up at the light fixture, parallel with the light bulb as shown below. This helps to offer a dedicated path for the trickle current, preventing your LED’s from flickering, while stabilizing your smart switch by helping it get enough current and prevents strain on both your switch and bulb, prolonging their lifespan.
In the example above, one wire from the bypass is connected to the load wire and the other is connected to the neutral. Please note that the colors of your wires may vary.
The close-up below shows how to install the bypass. Either black wire from the bypass can connect to the hot (brass/tan) terminal, and the other to the neutral (silver) terminal — it doesn’t matter which goes where.
