This article will explain how to control your smart bulb(s) from your smart switch(es) using your compatible Amazon Echo.

In this article, you will learn how to control your smart bulb(s) from your Blue or White Series Inovelli switch(es). Smart bulbs require full power to them at all time, so we will potentially be utilizing Smart Bulb Mode on your Inovelli switch plus the combination of multi-tap scene control using the Apple Home app.

1x Smart Bulb Wired to 1x Smart Switch

In this example, you have a smart bulb that is connected to the load of your smart switch as shown below.

Because the above example has the Inovelli switch wired directly to the smart bulb, we will need to use Smart Bulb Mode to ensure the smart bulb always has power to it, then use a combination of multi-taps to turn on and off the bulb.

Written Instructions

  1. First, put your Inovelli Blue or White Series switch into Smart Bulb Mode by holding down on the top part of the paddle (on) while simultaneously tapping the configuration button four (4) times (do not let go of the paddle when finished tapping the config button). Wait for the LED Bar to flash solid yellow (and then let go of the paddle) indicating the switch has enabled Smart Bulb Mode.

  2. Start by opening up your Amazon Alexa app and clicking on, "More" at the bottom right of the screen

  3. Click on, "Routines"

  4. Click on the, "+" to create a routine

  5. Click on the, "+" next to, "Add an event" under the, "When" section

  6. Click on, "Smart Home"

  7. Click on your Inovelli Blue or White Series switch

  8. We'll first set the action for when the Blue or White Series switch top paddle is pressed, the smart bulb will turn on. To do this, click on, "Turned On" and then, "Next".

  9. Click on the, "+" next to, "Add an action" under the, "Alexa Will" section

  10. Click on, "Smart Home"

  11. Click on, "Lights"

  12. Click on the smart bulb you want to turn on and click, "Next"

  13. Select, "Power" and then, "On" followed by, "Next" (NOTE: This will turn the bulb on to the last level it was at before being turned off -- if you want to have the bulb turn on to a certain percentage each time, then select, "Brightness" and select the % value you want the bulb to turn on to)

  14. Click on, "Finish"

  15. Now we'll set the switch to turn off the bulb when the down paddle is clicked.

  16. Click on the, "+" at the top right of the screen

  17. Click on the, "+" next to, "Add an event" under the, "When" section

  18. Click on, "Smart Home"

  19. Click on your Inovelli Blue or White Series switch

  20. We'll set the action for when the Blue or White Series switch bottom paddle is pressed, the smart bulb will turn off. To do this, click on, "Turned Off" and then, "Next".

  21. Click on the, "+" next to, "Add an action" under the, "Alexa Will" section

  22. Click on, "Smart Home"

  23. Click on, "Lights"

  24. Click on the smart bulb you want to turn off and click, "Next"

  25. Since we want the smart bulb to turn off, select, "Power" and then, "Off", followed by, "Next"

  26. Finally, click, "Save" and test out your routine, by pressing up and down on the Inovelli Blue or White Series switch and see if your smart bulb turns on and off

2+ Smart Bulbs Wired to 1x Smart Switch

In this example, you have multiple smart bulbs that are connected to the load of your smart switch as shown below.

Because the above example has the Inovelli switch wired directly to the smart bulbs, we will need to use Smart Bulb Mode to ensure the smart bulbs always has power to them, then use a combination of multi-taps to turn on and off the bulbs.

Written Instructions

  1.   14. Now, we'll add another bulb -- click on the, "+" next to, "Add another action" under the, "Alexa Will" section

  15. Select your other smart bulb and then click on, "Next"

  16. Click on, "Power" and then, "On" (again, remember this will turn the bulb on to the last level it was prior to being turned off -- if you want the smart bulb to turn on to a specific level, click on, "Brightness" and slide the toggle to the appropriate dim level you want)

  17. Click on, "Finish"

  18. Now we'll set the switch to turn off the bulbs when the down paddle is clicked.

  19. Click on the, "+" at the top right of the screen

  20. Click on the, "+" next to, "Add an event" under the, "When" section

  21. Click on, "Smart Home"

  22. Click on your Inovelli Blue or White Series switch

  23. We'll set the action for when the Blue or White Series switch bottom paddle is pressed, the smart bulb will turn off. To do this, click on, "Turned Off" and then, "Next".

  24. Click on the, "+" next to, "Add an action" under the, "Alexa Will" section

  25. Click on, "Smart Home"

  26. Click on, "Lights"

  27. Click on the smart bulb you want to turn off and click, "Next"

  28. Since we want the smart bulb to turn off, select, "Power" and then, "Off", followed by, "Next"

  29. Now we'll follow the same steps above to turn off the other smart bulb -- click on the, "+" next to, "Add another action" under the, "Alexa Will" section

  30. Click on, "Smart Home"

  31. Click on, "Lights"

  32. Select your other smart bulb and click, "Next"

  33. Click on, "Power", then, "Off" and then, "Next"

  34. Finally, click, "Finish" and test your routine by tapping up and down on your Blue or White Series switch and seeing if the smart bulbs turn on and off

1x Smart Bulb Not Wired to 1x Smart Switch

In this example, you have a smart bulb that is not connected to the load of your smart switch as shown below.

In the above example, the bulb is not directly wired to the switch, so we will not need to use Smart Bulb Mode. However, please ensure that the smart bulb is on and no one shuts off the lamp (or fixture). Below we will setup a series of automations to turn on and off your smart bulb using your Inovelli White Series switch.

Written Instructions

  1. Start by opening up your Amazon Alexa app and clicking on, "More" at the bottom right of the screen

  2. Click on, "Routines"

  3. Click on the, "+" to create a routine

  4. Click on the, "+" next to, "Add an event" under the, "When" section

  5. Click on, "Smart Home"
