How to Set Up Z-Wave Associations on SmartThings
Z-Wave Association allows two Z-Wave devices to communicate directly with each other without requiring an automation or command from the SmartThings hub.
For example, you can associate an Inovelli Red Series switch with another Z-Wave switch or dimmer so that pressing the paddle on the Inovelli switch directly controls the associated device.
Because the commands are sent directly between the devices, associations can provide very fast response times and can continue to work even if the SmartThings hub temporarily loses its Internet connection.
NOTE: Both devices must be included on the same Z-Wave network. In addition, the devices should be included using the same Z-Wave security level for associations to work properly.
Before You Begin
Make sure your Inovelli Red Series device is using the latest Inovelli SmartThings Edge driver.
These instructions require the Inovelli Red Series (inovelli-red-series) driver. Make sure you have it installed and assigned to the controlling device: Edge Drivers • SmartThings | Inovelli Help Center
The Inovelli Red Series SmartThings drivers expose the Z-Wave Association settings needed to configure associations directly from the SmartThings app.
If your device is using a different driver, the association options described below may not appear.
Step 1 – Find the Network ID of the Device You Want to Control
Z-Wave Association is configured on the controlling device.
For example:
Controlling Device: Inovelli Red Series switch
Controlled Device: Another Z-Wave switch or dimmer
Before creating the association, you need to find the Network ID of the controlled device.
SmartThings no longer displays the Network ID directly in the SmartThings mobile app, so you will need to use the SmartThings Advanced Users website.
1. Open the SmartThings Advanced Users Website
Go to:
Sign in using the same Samsung account used with your SmartThings hub.
2. Open Devices
Select Devices from the menu.
3. Select the Device You Want to Control
Find and open the Z-Wave device that you want your Inovelli switch to control.
4. Locate the Network ID
Find the Network ID listed for the device.
For example:
8F
Make a note of this value. You will enter it into the Inovelli device's Association settings.
NOTE: The Network ID is typically displayed as a hexadecimal value. Enter it into the Inovelli driver exactly as SmartThings displays it.
Step 2 – Configure the Association
The remaining steps are completed in the SmartThings mobile app.
1. Open Your Inovelli Device
Open the Inovelli Red Series device that will act as the controlling device.
2. Open Device Settings
Tap the three-dot menu in the upper-right corner and select:
Settings
3. Locate the Z-Wave Association Settings
Scroll down until you see the Z-Wave Association settings.
Your Inovelli device may provide several association groups depending on the model and firmware.
Each association group controls a different type of behavior.
For example, an association group may be used to:
Mirror the switch's on/off state to another device
Mirror the dimming level to another dimmer
Send commands when specific buttons or scenes are activated
Control additional associated Z-Wave devices
Refer to your Inovelli device's manual for the function of each supported Association Group.
4. Enter the Network ID
Enter the Network ID you recorded earlier into the desired Association Group.
For example:

If you want to associate multiple devices with the same group, enter each Network ID according to the format shown in the driver.
5. Save the Settings
Tap Save.
The SmartThings Edge driver will send the association configuration to your Inovelli device.
Step 3 – Test the Association
After saving the settings, test the controlling Inovelli switch.
You should see the device association listed in the device page if it was set correctly:
Depending on the Association Group you configured, pressing or holding the paddle should now send commands directly to the associated device.
For example:
Tap Up
Associated device turns on.
Tap Down
Associated device turns off.
Hold Up
Associated dimmer increases its level.
Hold Down
Associated dimmer decreases its level.
Because these commands are sent directly over Z-Wave, SmartThings automations are not required for the associated devices to communicate.
Removing an Association
To remove an associated device:
Open the controlling Inovelli device in the SmartThings app.
Tap the three-dot menu.
Select Settings.
Locate the applicable Z-Wave Association Group.
Remove the Network ID of the device you no longer want associated.
Tap Save.
The driver will update the association configuration on the Inovelli device.
Troubleshooting
If the association does not work, check the following:
Verify Both Devices Are on the Same Z-Wave Network
Z-Wave Association only works between devices included on the same Z-Wave network.
Verify Z-Wave Security
Both devices should be included using the same Z-Wave security level.
For example, a device included with S2 Authenticated may not be able to directly associate with a device included without security.
Verify the Network ID
Confirm that the Network ID entered into the Association Group matches the Network ID shown in the SmartThings Advanced Users interface.
Verify the Association Group
Different Association Groups perform different functions.
Make sure the Network ID was entered into the group corresponding to the behavior you want.
Verify Driver Version
Make sure the Inovelli device is using the latest Inovelli SmartThings Edge driver.
Refresh the Device
After changing association settings, wait a few seconds and test the devices again.
If necessary, open the Inovelli device in SmartThings and perform a Refresh before testing again.
Additional Information
Z-Wave Association is different from a SmartThings Routine.
With a normal SmartThings Routine, the process generally looks like:
Inovelli Switch → SmartThings Hub → Controlled Device
With Z-Wave Association, communication occurs directly:
Inovelli Switch → Controlled Device
This can provide faster response times and allows the associated devices to continue communicating locally without relying on a SmartThings Routine.
