DISCLAIMER: You may notice there are a lot of over-used keywords or phrases as well as English that seems a little off. This is because these articles are used to feed our AI Robot (Ira) and she needs the data to be structured in a certain way.

REMINDER: This switch is only to be used to control AC Motor exhaust and ceiling fans. Do not use the switches on any sort of lighting load or DC Motor.

IMPORTANT: Before installing your fan switch, please ensure the fan motor is set to high speed. If you notice that after you install your fan switch the speeds are not as fast as they were prior to installing your switch, it's likely that the motor was not on high (please adjust if you find this is the case).

Please use the article below to understand more about wiring your Blue Series Fan switch. Each picture has a before (what your wiring should look like prior to installing your smart switch) and an after (how your wiring should look with your smart switch installed).

Find the before picture that matches your wiring and if you don't see your before wiring, then please consult an electrician or post in our community in our dedicated wiring section as we are not able to give out specific wiring advice due to liabilities.

WARNING: We cannot provide direct wiring advice due to insurance liabilities. If you are unsure of how to read a schematic and/or are unsure of what you’re doing, please consult a licensed electrician. Failure to install the switch properly will result in a voided warranty and could possibly lead to injury.

IMPORTANT: If you have a mud-ring junction box, you won't be able to put two switches side by side without replacing the junction box with one that doesn't have a mud-ring.

Wiring Diagrams Overview

Below you'll find the schematics for the Blue Series Fan Switch. Please first start by finding your Switch Type (Single Pole or Multi-Way - Aux or Smart Switch). Once you find the Switch Type section, click on the corresponding drop-down for your switches mode (Neutral or Non-Neutral).

Remember, the switch can only work in the following scenarios:

For installations where no neutral wire is present, you will not have the ability to control the, “High” speed. Exhaust fans are not supported in non-neutral setups. If you are using an aux switch, special programming is required (please see:
inov.li/vzm35snnoneutralaux)

Single Pole Diagrams

Single-pole refers to having one smart switch controlling your load (light). You can have multiple lights, but there is only one switch that controls it.

Single Pole With Neutral Wire

Find the before picture (shown on the left) that best aligns with your wiring and then wire your switch per the schematic. If you do not see your before wiring or are unsure, please consult an electrician or post in the Wiring Discussion section in our community for help as we cannot give out electrical advice outside the schematics shown.

IMPORTANT: Before installing your fan switch, please ensure the fan motor is set to high speed. If you notice that after you install your fan switch the speeds are not as fast as they were prior to installing your switch, it's likely that the motor was not on high (please adjust if you find this is the case).

NOTE: You can click on the picture to enlarge it and zoom in.

Single Pole Without Neutral Wire

Find the before picture (shown on the left) that best aligns with your wiring and then wire your switch per the schematic. If you do not see your before wiring or are unsure, please consult an electrician or post in the Wiring Discussion section in our community for help as we cannot give out electrical advice outside the schematics shown.

Please remember that you will only have low and medium speeds when the switch is operating in non-neutral mode.

Multi-Way (3-Way) + Auxiliary / Add-On Diagrams

Multi-Way with an Aux / Add-On switch refers to having two or more switches (one smart switch + one or more aux switches) controlling your load (light).

  • 3-Way = Two (2) switches controlling one (1) load

  • 4-Way = Three (3) switches controlling one (1) load

  • 5-Way = Four (4) switches controlling one (1) load

An auxiliary (add-on) switch refers to a special switch designed to work with your Inovelli Blue Series Fan Switch to allow dimming and scene control at both ends.

IMPORTANT NOTES - PLEASE READ

You must install the smart switch where there is a line (120V) present and you cannot install it where there are only travelers (this is reflected in the schematics below). The only approved aux switches are ones made by Inovelli, GE / Honeywell (now Jasco), or HomeSeer. Additionally, you must program your switch to work with an add-on switch after you restore power by holding down the top of the paddle while tapping down on the config button 5x, then releasing (switch will blink pink to confirm) as shown in the GIF below.

Manual Programming Example GIF

Please use the above GIF as a reference for manual programming of the switch. Again, we recommend doing this via setting Parameter 22 to the value of 2 from within your app.

3-Way With Neutral Wire

Find the before picture (shown on the left) that best aligns with your wiring and then wire your switch per the schematic. If you do not see your before wiring or are unsure, please consult an electrician or post in the Wiring Discussion section in our community for help as we cannot give out electrical advice outside the schematics shown.

REMEMBER: You have to program your Inovelli Blue Series Fan Switch to work manually with your aux (add-on) switch. We recommend programming your switch via your app (SmartThings, Hubitat, Home Assistant, etc), but if you want to do it manually, please hold down the top of the paddle while tapping down on the config button 5x, then releasing (switch will blink pink to confirm) as shown in the, "Manual Programming Example GIF" drop-down.

IMPORTANT: Before installing your fan switch, please ensure the fan motor is set to high speed. If you notice that after you install your fan switch the speeds are not as fast as they were prior to installing your switch, it's likely that the motor was not on high (please adjust if you find this is the case).

NOTE: You can click on any of the pictures to enlarge them and zoom in.

IMPORTANT: You have to program your Inovelli Blue Series Fan Switch to work manually with your aux (add-on) switch. In addition, your switch will have to go through a learning process to work properly with an aux switch. The learning process can be found here: Blue Series Fan Switch • Special Programming for Aux Switch in Non-Neutral Mode

REMEMBER: You will only have 2-Speeds in non-neutral mode, low and medium.

IMPORTANT: Before installing your fan switch, please ensure the fan motor is set to high speed. If you notice that after you install your fan switch the speeds are not as fast as they were prior to installing your switch, it's likely that the motor was not on high (please adjust if you find this is the case).

Multi-Way (3-Way) + 2x Smart Switches Diagrams

Multi-Way with 2x+ switches refers to having two or more smart switches controlling your load (light). In other words, there are no dumb or aux switches, but rather all switches controlling the load are smart switches.

  • 3-Way = Two (2) switches controlling one (1) load

  • 4-Way = Three (3) switches controlling one (1) load

  • 5-Way = Four (4) switches controlling one (1) load

IMPORTANT NOTES - PLEASE READ

You will have to rewire your setup to a non-traditional way of wiring (we’re going to put 120V to each switch) so that the switch will work. Please take a picture of the before wires so that if you ever move and revert back to dumb switches, you remember what the wiring was like. In addition, you must use an Inovelli switch in this setup as well as determine whether or not your hub/gateway supports Zigbee Binding (if not, the only other method is Zigbee Scene Control). Finally, you will need to have a neutral wire installation.
