This is the digital setup instructions for the Red Series RGBTW Light Strip Kit on the SmartThings platform.
Navigating the Instructions
Please click on any of the sections in the Table of Contents to get started. We recommend working your way down as it follows an intentional flow that is user friendly and hub/gateway specific. As always, any questions, please see the Additional Resources links section or submit a ticket, we’re happy to help.
Quick Setup Instructions
Follow these if you have already installed the light strip before and are just looking for some quick pairing instructions. If this is your first time installing the light strip, please skip this section and work your way through the various sections below starting with the Prerequisites.
This section assumes the following:
You’ve installed the Edge Driver
Let’s begin:
Make sure the controller is plugged in
Open up your SmartThings App to the, “Devices” tab and click on the + at the top right
Click, “Add Device”
Then under, “Scan for nearby devices” click, “Scan”
Tap on the Config/Favorites Button 3x
The light strip should start to pulse blue indicating it's in inclusion mode - it will turn green to indicate it was included successfully as shown in the Video Demonstration
SmartThings will then let you know that the light strip was added (and it should be called, "Inovelli Light")
Feel free to label the device and, if applicable, add it to a room
If you run into issues where your light strip is not including, you may have to try an exclusion process. To do this, put your gateway in exclusion mode and then tap the config/favorites button 3x. The light strip should start pulsing blue indicating it’s in exclusion mode. If successful, it will turn green and you can try inclusion again.
If this still does not work, then try performing a factory reset.
Prerequisites
The only prerequisite to pairing this switch is the following:
Installation of the Device Edge Driver
While this switch will also pair without it, for full functionality, you’ll want to install the Edge Driver.
Device Edge Driver Installation
To install the Edge Driver, please follow the instructions below:
Click on the following link Samsung Edge Driver Access and sign into your Samsung account (you may have 2-Factor Authentication on – if so, please follow the directions Samsung gives you to attain a code)
Next, click, “Enroll” by the hub your devices are paired to
Next, click, “Available Drivers”
Finally, click on the driver you’d like installed by clicking, “Install” (NOTE: In this case, please install, “Inovelli Light”)
Now when you pair your light strip, it should automatically pick up the Edge Driver. Feel free to move onto the next section of the Setup Instructions below.

The below instructions assume you have installed the Device Driver prior to pairing.
Please follow the instructions below to include/pair your Red Series RGBTW Light Strip Kit
Plug in your light strip controller and attach the light strip to it so that it's lit up

Press the (+) button at the top right of the screen
Click on, “Add Device”
At the bottom of the screen click on, "Scan nearby"
While your SmartThings hub is scanning, tap on the Config/Favorites Button 3x as shown in the GIF below. The light strip should start to pulse blue indicating it's in inclusion mode - it will turn green to indicate it was included successfully
If your light strip was included successfully, you should see a confirmation in your SmartThings app. If you'd like to rename the switch and/or change the room it's assigned to, click on, "Edit", change either or and click, "Save" and then, "Done"
Once your light strip is successfully paired, check to make sure you have basic functionality of it by turning it on/off and change colors.
Advanced Feature Setup
Below we will provide a link to all the parameters and show you how to change them from within SmartThings and then we'll go into some of the advanced features and explain how to set them up in SmartThings.
Parameter Explanations
You will need to install an Edge Driver prior to accessing any of these features from within the app. Instructions can be found here: Edge Driver Installation
A parameter is a setting within the light strip firmware that allows you to change how the light strip operates.
To access your parameters, please follow the steps below (NOTE: Fan switch instructions are shown, but the same procedure applies):
Open your SmartThings App and go to the, "Devices" tab
Find your Red Series RGBTW Light Strip Kit and click on it
Click on the three dots at the top right and select, "Settings"
From here, you can scroll down, locate and change the various parameters on the switch
For a list of the most up-to-date parameters and the firmware version they are associated with, please visit the Red Series RGBTW Light Strip Kit Parameter Page
Quick Strip Effect (Animated Notifications)
Animated notifications are used when you want to have a visual cue on your LED bar notify you of a certain event. A few examples would be:
LED Bar pulses purple if your garage door is left open past 9pm
LED Bar chases red if your front door is unlocked
LED Bar fast blinks orange if a door is opened at night time
These notifications are accomplished by using, "Routines" within the SmartThings App.
For more information about Animated Notifications as well as some examples of how to set them up, please visit the following article: Setting Up Animated Notifications • SmartThings
Custom Strip Effect
The Custom Strip Effects are similar our smart switch Animated Notifications, but give you more customization over color/transition, dim level, duration and number of iterations the effect repeats. Some common use examples are:
Light Strip pulses orange if the garage door is left open past 10pm
Light Strip turns red if the alarm system is armed
Light Strip chases green at 10am to remind you to take your medicine
To create a Custom Strip Effect, please follow the directions below:
Open your SmartThings App and go to the, "Devices" tab
Find your Inovelli light strip and click on it
Next, you're going to have to grab the parameter values of your Custom Effect. To see examples of what these effects could look like, check out our Toolbox located here and select the On/Off + Dimmer Switch (VZW31-SN) under, "Z-Wave" and click the dropdown where it says, "Effect": https://inovelliusa.github.io/inovelli-switch-toolbox/
However, you're going to have to build the Effect by yourself. You'll get four parameter numbers that you're going to put into SmartThings. To get these numbers, please use our LED Strip Toolbox Calculator.
Once you've built your Custom Effect and attained the parameter values, scroll down to where it says, "CustomEffects" and click on the pencil
Input the numbers, separated by commas, into the, "CustomEffects" field as shown below and click, "Done"
To turn off your Custom Effect, input the value of 0,0,0,0 in the, "CustomEffects" field as shown below and click, "Done"
Strip Pixel Effects
The Pixel Effects are pre-installed animations that can quickly be turned on. There are 46 to choose from and they can be found here: Pixel Effects
To turn on a Pixel Effect, please follow the directions below:
Open your SmartThings App and go to the, "Devices" tab
Find your Inovelli light strip and click on it
OPTIONAL: Select the color you want your Pixel Effect to be
Scroll down to where it says, "Pixel Effect" and click the gear icon
Select the effect you want
To turn off the effect, simply click on the gear icon and select, "Stop"
If you'd like to set up a routine where one of these Pixel Effects turns on based on an event, please follow the instructions for Scene Control or Animated Notifications and look for Pixel Effects within the, "Then" tab as shown below:
Scene Control
Scene control, in this context, refers to activating a scene from your light switch via a tap sequence (ie: double-tap, triple-tap, favorites button, etc). This is not to be confused with setting up scenes in your SmartThings app, which is different.
To learn how to setup multi-tap scene control, please visit the following article: Setting Up Multi-Tap Scene Control • SmartThings
Z-Wave Associations
Z-Wave Associations is when two or more Z-Wave products communicate directly with one another without the need to communicate with a hub. There are two main benefits of utilizing Z-Wave Associations: speed & local control.
From a speed standpoint, cutting out the middle-man (hub) can save precious milliseconds or even seconds depending on your cloud and/or processing power off your hub. Whereas from a local control standpoint, if your hub goes does down and cannot communicate, your products can still talk to each other.
To setup Z-Wave Associations with your SmartThings Hub, please see this article: Setting Up Z-Wave Associations • SmartThings
