DISCLAIMER: You may notice there are a lot of over-used keywords or phrases as well as English that seems a little off. This is because these articles are used to feed our AI Robot (Ira) and she needs the data to be structured in a certain way.

REMINDER: This module is only to be used to control AC Motor exhaust and ceiling fans. Do not use the module on any sort of lighting load or DC Motor.

IMPORTANT: Before installing your fan module, please ensure the fan motor is set to high speed. If you notice that after you install your fan module the speeds are not as fast as they were prior to installing your module, it's likely that the motor was not on high (please adjust if you find this is the case).

This is the digital setup instructions for the Blue Series Smart Fan/Canopy Module on the Hubitat platform.

Navigating the Instructions

Please click on any of the sections in the Table of Contents to get started. We recommend working your way down as it follows an intentional flow that is user friendly and hub/gateway specific. As always, any questions, please see the Additional Resources links section or submit a ticket, we’re happy to help.

Prerequisites

The only prerequisite to pairing this module is the following:

  • Installation of the Device Driver

While this module will also pair without it, for full functionality, you’ll want to install the Device Driver.

Device Driver Installation

To install the Device Drivers, please follow the instructions below (you will need to install all three drivers since this device has both parent and children devices):

  1. Open up your Hubitat web app and click on, "Drivers Code" in the menu (you may have to click on, "Advanced" if you don't see this option)

  2. Click on, "+ New Driver"

  3. Click on, "Import" and a box should appear that says, "Import Code from Website" and it will ask you for a URL

  4. Paste the following URL (https://raw.githubusercontent.com/InovelliUSA/Hubitat/master/Drivers/inovelli-fan-light-canopy-module-blue-series-vzm36.src/VZM36_Zigbee_Canopy_Main.groovy) into the section titled, "Insert URL to Import Text into Code Editor" and click, "Import" (followed by, "OK" when asked if you want to override the text in the editor)

  5. Click, "Save"

Now when you pair your module, it should automatically pick up the original Device Driver (you'll have to initialize the child device drivers shown in Step 9 in the, "Pairing Instructions" below). Feel free to move onto the next section of the Setup Instructions below.

Installation Instructions

Before setting up your module within Hubitat, you will have to manually install your module in the wall and have it powered up. In order to do that, you (or your licensed electrician) will need to follow our Wiring Instructions which can be found below:

Pairing Instructions

The below instructions assume you have installed the Device Drivers (all three of them) prior to pairing. Please follow the instructions below to include/pair your Blue Series Fan/Canopy Module.

  1. Open your Hubitat Web App and go to the, "Devices" tab

  2. Press the (+ Add Device) button at the top right of the screen

  3. Under, "Add device manually:", click on, “Zigbee”

  4. Click on, "Start Zigbee Pairing"

  5. While your Hubitat hub is scanning, make sure your module LED Indicator is pulsing blue as shown in Video #1 – if it’s not, press the Pairing button three (3) times as shown in Video #2. The LED Indicator should start pulsing blue and, if successfully paired to SmartThings, it will briefly turn green

Video #1: Module Already Pulsing Blue

Video #2: Press config/favorites button to initiate the LED pulsing blue

  6. In addition, Hubitat will let you know that the device was found and ultimately added

  7. You can change the name of your module by clicking underneath where it says, "Give your new Inovelli VZM36 Zigbee Canopy a name"

  8. To view your device and change any of the parameters, click on, "View device details" (NOTE: Your screen may look different depending on the hub version you have).

  9. Please make sure your device page looks like this:

If it doesn't, please scroll to the bottom where it says, "Device Information" and under, "Type", select, "Inovelli VZM36 Zigbee Canopy" and click, "Save Device" (if this doesn't show up, then please make sure the Device Drivers are installed)

  10. Click on, "Initialize" and Hubitat will create, "child devices" so that you can control your fan speed and light dim level

  11. To check to make sure the child devices were created, click on, "Devices", find your module and then click on the drop-down

Feel free to click into each of the child devices and test to make sure the fan motor can be controlled (by clicking on, "Set Speed" and changing the speed) and the light level can be changed (by going to the box titled, "Set Level" and entering a value of 1-99).

Module Configuration

In this section, we will help you change your module's fan and light settings (ie: Exhaust or Ceiling / On/Off or Dimmer).

By default, the module is set to, "Ceiling Fan" mode (ie: 3-Speed) and, "Dimmer" mode, so if you plan on keeping it as a speed controller for the fan motor and a dimmer for the light portion, then you can skip this part. However, if you want the fan and/or light to only turn on/off, then feel free to move forward in configuring it to operate as an on/off module.

If you are trying to setup your switch in Smart Fan Mode, please still select the Switch Mode and Type from the below instructions, and then follow the directions to setup Smart Fan Mode

Module Fan Mode (Exhaust or Ceiling)

To change your Blue Series Fan/Light Canopy Module from a Ceiling Fan (Multi-Speed) to an On/Off Fan or vice versa in Hubitat, please follow the instructions below (again, by default it is set to a speed controller for a ceiling fan, so if that's what you want, you can ignore this step):

  1. Open your Hubitat Web App and go to the, "Devices" tab

  2. Find the fan portion of your Blue Series Fan/Light Canopy Module and click on it

  3. Scroll down to where it says, "Preferences" and find, "258. Switch Mode"

  4. Click on, "258. Switch Mode" and select either, "Exhaust Fan (On/Off)" or "Ceiling Fan (Multi-Speed)". Then, scroll down to where it says, "Save Preferences" and click on it. Again, by default, it should be, "Ceiling Fan (Multi-Speed)".

  5. Test your module to make sure the setting applied.

Module Light Mode (On/Off or Dimmer)

To change your Blue Series Fan/Light Canopy Module's light portion from a Dimmer to an On/Off Fan or vice versa in Hubitat, please follow the instructions below (again, by default it is set to be a dimmer, so if that's what you want, you can ignore this step):

  1. Open your Hubitat Web App and go to the, "Devices" tab

  2. Find the light portion of your Blue Series Fan/Light Canopy Module and click on it

  3. Scroll down to where it says, "Preferences" and find, "258. Switch Mode"

  4. Click on, "258. Switch Mode" and select either, "Dimmer" or "On/Off". Then, scroll down to where it says, "Save Preferences" and click on it. Again, by default, it should be, "Dimmer".

  5. Test your module to make sure the setting applied.

Advanced Feature Setup

This module is packed with features and most of them come directly from this community. They've been debated back and forth, added to wishlists, and talked about over the course of 5+ years.

Below we will provide a link to all the parameters and show you how to change them from within Hubitat and then we'll go into some of the advanced features and explain how to set them up in Hubitat.

Parameter Explanations

You will need to install three Device Drivers prior to accessing any of these features from within the app. Instructions can be found here: Device Driver Installation

A parameter is a setting within the switch firmware that allows you to change how the switch operates. For example, you want to change how fast your lights dim on and off, the color of the LED bar, minimum dimming level and much more -- all with a few clicks within the app.

To find all the parameters, please follow these steps:

  1. Open your Hubitat Web App and go to the, "Devices" tab

  2. Find your Blue Series Fan/Light Canopy Module and click on either the Fan or Light child device. In this case, we'll click on the Fan portion for illustrative purposes.

  3. Scroll down to where it says, "Preferences" - here is where all the parameters are listed out and can be changed via the drop-downs

For a list of the most up-to-date parameters and the firmware version they are associated with, please visit the Blue Series Fan/Light Canopy Module Parameter Page

Smart Bulb/Fan Mode

Smart Bulb or Fan Mode is a special mode that allows you to use your Inovelli smart canopy module to control smart bulbs or smart fans. Rather than cutting power to your smart bulbs or fans, Smart Bulb/Fan Mode tells the module to keep power to either the bulb or fan (or both) so that you can control the bulb or fan with a smart switch.

To use either Smart Bulb or Fan Mode in conjunction with an Inovelli Smart Switch. Please follow the directions in the, "Setting Up Multi-Tap Scene Control • Hubitat" article.

Zigbee Bindings

Zigbee binding is when two or more Zigbee products communicate directly with one another without the need to communicate with a hub. There are two main benefits of utilizing Zigbee binding: speed & local control.

From a speed standpoint, cutting out the middle-man (hub) can save precious milliseconds or even seconds depending on your cloud and/or processing power off your hub. Whereas from a local control standpoint, if your hub goes does down and cannot communicate, your products can still talk to each other.

To setup Zigbee Binding with your Hubitat Hub, please see this article: Setting Up Zigbee Bindings • Hubitat or if you'd like to connect a smart switch to the canopy module, please see this article: Setting Up Your Blue Series Fan/Light Canopy Module With an Inovelli Switch • Hubitat
