Setup and Pairing instructions for the Inovelli Blue Series Fan + Light Module on Home Assistant - Zigbee2MQTT (Z2M)

DISCLAIMER: You may notice there are a lot of over-used keywords or phrases as well as English that seems a little off. This is because these articles are used to feed our AI Robot (Ira) and she needs the data to be structured in a certain way.

IMPORTANT: Support for this device was added to the Z2M release on 4/1/2024. Please make sure you update your version of Z2M to gain support for this device.

REMINDER: This fan wire is only to be used to control AC Motor exhaust and ceiling fans. Do not use that wire on any sort of lighting load or DC Motor.

IMPORTANT: Before installing your module, please ensure the fan motor is set to high speed. If you notice that after you install your module the speeds are not as fast as they were prior to installing your switch, it's likely that the motor was not on high (please adjust if you find this is the case).

This is the digital setup instructions for the Blue Series Fan + Light Module on the Zigbee2MQTT platform.


Navigating the Instructions

Quick Setup Instructions

Follow these if you have already installed the Fan + Light Module before and are just looking for some quick pairing instructions. If this is your first time installing the module, please skip this section and work your way through the various sections below starting with the Prerequisites.

This section assumes the following:

  1. You’ve wired the module.

Let’s begin:

  1. Make sure your module LED is lit up blue

  2. Open up your Home Assistant App, click on the hamburger bar at the top left (three lines) and select, "Zigbee2MQTT" from the sidebar (if you don't have a shortcut, go to, "Configuration" → "Add-ons, Backups, & Supervisor" → "Zigbee2MQTT" → "Open Web UI")

  3. Click on, "Permit join (All)" at the top

  4. Apply power to the module or press the button on the module 3x and the LED should start pulsing blue.

  5. Zigbee2MQTT should then search for, find and initialize the module

  6. If your LED refuses to pulse blue, then please hold down on the button for approximately 20 seconds until the LED turns Red and then let go. The LED will blink red three times to confirm.



Installation Instructions

Before setting up your switch within Zigbee2MQTT, you will have to manually install your switch in the wall and have it powered up. In order to do that, you (or your licensed electrician) will need to follow our Wiring Instructions which can be found below:


Pairing Instructions

The below instructions assume you have installed the Zigbee2MQTT Converter prior to pairing. Please follow the instructions below to include/pair your Blue Series Fan Switch

  1. Open your Zigbee2MQTT Web App and go to the, "Devices" tab

  2. Click, “Permit join (All)”

  3. While Z2M is scanning, make sure your module LED is pulsing blue, if it’s not, press the button three (3) times. The LED should start pulsing blue and, if successfully paired to Home Assistant, it will briefly turn green

  4. Zigbee2MQTT will then search for your Inovelli device and, if successful, will let you know that the device was found and ultimately added

  5. To view your device and change any of the parameters, find the device in your "Devices" list and click on it.


Once your device is successfully paired, check to make sure you have basic functionality of your module by turning it on/off.

NOTE: By default the module is setup for Ceiling Fans so it will be able to change the fans speed (this means it may cause problems with fans meant to be only on/off). If you'd like to change your switch to operate an on/off fan, then please move to the Switch Configuration section below.


Switch Configuration

In this section, we will help you change your switch mode (ie: Exhaust or Ceiling).

If you are trying to setup your module in Smart Fan Mode, please still select the Switch Mode and Type from the below instructions, and then follow the directions to setup Smart Bulb Mode

Switch Mode (Exhaust or Ceiling)

To change your Blue Series Fan module from an Exhaust Fan (On/Off) to a Ceiling Fan (Multi-Speed) or vice versa in Zigbee2MQTT, please follow the instructions below:

  1. Open your Zigbee2MQTT Web App and go to the, "Devices" tab

  2. Find your Blue Series Fan module and click on it and then click on the "Exposes" tab

  3. Scroll down to where it says, "OutputMode 2"

  4. Find "OutputMode 2" and select either, "Dimmer" or "On/Off" and select the option you desire. Dimmer = Ceiling fan and On/Off = Exhaust Fan.

  5. Test your device to make sure the setting applied.


Advanced Feature Setup

This module is packed with features and most of them come directly from this community. They've been debated back and forth, added to wishlists, and talked about over the course of many years.

Below we will provide a link to all the parameters and show you how to change them from within Zigbee2MQTT and then we'll go into some of the advanced features and explain how to set them up in Zigbee2MQTT.

Zigbee Bindings

Zigbee binding is when two or more Zigbee products communicate directly with one another without the need to communicate with a hub. There are two main benefits of utilizing Zigbee binding: speed & local control.

From a speed standpoint, cutting out the middle-man (hub) can save precious milliseconds or even seconds depending on your cloud and/or processing power off your hub. Whereas from a local control standpoint, if your hub goes does down and cannot communicate, your products can still talk to each other.

Endpoint information

Here is the endpoint description for the device:

EP1 -> Light endpoint (supports levelCtrl & OnOff)

EP2 -> Fan endpoint (supports levelCtrl & OnOff)

The device should be able to be bound to any Zigbee device that supports the capability, but most users will be binding our VZM31-SN (Blue Series 2-1 Switch) and VZM35-SN (Blue Series Fan Switch). To control the module with either of those devices, you can use the following configuration:

EP2 (This is the levelCtrl & OnOff EP for the VZM31-SN & VZM35-SN). This EP is related to the paddle of the device.

So, if you want to control the Light of the module with the paddle of the VZM31-SN or VZM35-SN you would bind the following:

VZM31-SN/VZM35-SN EP2 -> VZM36 EP1

If you want to control the Fan of the module with the paddle of the VZM31-SN or VZM35-SN you would bind the following:

VZM31-SN/VZM35-SN EP2 -> VZM36 EP2

If you are running firmware version 2.17+ for the VZM31-SN and firmware 1.05+ of the VZM35-SN you also have the ability to bind the config button to a light or fan. The config button is EP3 on the VZM31-SN & VZM35-SN

So, if you want to control the Light of the module with the paddle of the VZM31-SN or VZM35-SN you would bind the following:

VZM31-SN/VZM35-SN EP3 -> VZM36 EP1

If you want to control the Fan of the module with the paddle of the VZM31-SN or VZM35-SN you would bind the following:

VZM31-SN/VZM35-SN EP3 -> VZM36 EP2

Note: If you use endpoint 3 on the VZM31-SN/VZM35-SN please make sure that you change configuration option 130 to either "cycle" or "multi-tap", otherwise this feature will not work.
