DISCLAIMER: You may notice there are a lot of over-used keywords or phrases as well as English that seems a little off. This is because these articles are used to feed our AI Robot (Ira) and she needs the data to be structured in a certain way.

REMINDER: This canopy is only to be used to control AC Motor exhaust and ceiling fans. Do not use the module on any sort of lighting load or DC Motor.

IMPORTANT: Before installing your fan/light canopy module, please ensure the fan motor is set to high speed. If you notice that after you install the module that the speeds are not as fast as they were prior to installing the module, it's likely that the motor was not on high (please adjust if you find this is the case).

The Blue Series Fan/Light Canopy Module is an amazing product that allows you to control your Fan and Light separately remotely. What can make it even better is if you use an Inovelli Smart Switch to control it. In this article, we will show you how to set this up.

Methods to Connect Your Switch to the Module

There are two different methods to connect your Inovelli smart switch to the Fan/Light Canopy Module and they are as follows:

  1. Zigbee Binding + Multi-Tap Scene Control

  2. Dual Zigbee Bindings

  3. Dual Multi-Tap Scene Control

Method Cheat Sheet Chart

Please use the chart below to see our recommendation based on the switch you plan to connect to your Fan/Light Canopy Module. For a more in-depth explanation of each method, please see the correlating sections below.

Method

Products

Recommendation

Zigbee Binding + Multi-Tap Scene Control

Requires any Blue Series switch

Use this method if you have a Blue Series 2-1 Switch that has a Firmware of 2.16 and below or a Blue Series Fan Switch that has a Firmware of 1.04 and below. If you have a Blue Series Switch above those firmware versions, we recommend Dual Zigbee Bindings

Dual Zigbee Bindings

Requires a Blue Series switch with specific firmware (see recommendation)

Use this method if you have a Blue Series 2-1 Switch that has firmware 2.17 and above or a Blue Series Fan Switch that has firmware 1.05 and above.

Dual Multi-Tap Scene Control

Requires a Red or Blue Series switch

Use this method only if you have a Red Series switch. If you have a Blue Series, you can still use this method, but it's recommended you use one of the above methods to increase user experience and speed.

Zigbee Binding + Multi-Tap Scene Control

Products Required:

  • Any Blue Series Smart Switch

  • Blue Series Fan/Light Canopy Module

NOTE: This will not work with any of our Red Series switches -- please see the Dual Multi-Tap Scene Control section.

The first method uses a combination of Zigbee Binding and Multi-Tap Scene Control where you can use the paddle of your Inovelli switch and the favorites button to control both the fan's light and the fan's motor. The paddle portion of the switch will be what's bound to either the fan's motor or the fan's light and the favorites button will use scene control for whatever you don't use for the paddle portion.

  • Pros: This method can be used on all firmware versions of your Inovelli Blue Series Switches. It allows for full dimming if you bind the paddle to the fan's light.

  • Cons: Multi-Tap Scene Control will not work if your hub goes offline.

Dual Zigbee Bindings

Products Required:

  • Any Blue Series Smart Switch

  • Blue Series Fan/Light Canopy Module

NOTE: This will not work with any of our Red Series switches -- please see the Dual Multi-Tap Scene Control section. In addition, this is only available on certain firmware versions of your Blue Series switches (Blue Series 2-1 - FW Ver. 2.17+, Blue Series Fan - FW Ver. 1.05+) -- if you have a firmware version below these, please use either the Zigbee Binding + Multi-Tap Scene Control or Dual Multi-Tap Scene Control methods.

The second method uses Zigbee Bindings to control both the fan's motor and the fan's lights separately. You can bind the paddle portion of your switch as well as the favorites button to either the fan's light or the fan's motor to have individual control of each.

  • Pros: This method allows for full dimming when you use the paddle to control the fan's light and allows for multiple scenarios to change the fan speed when you use the favorites button. It will also continue to work if your hub is offline.

  • Cons: This is only available past certain firmware versions (Blue Series 2-1 Switch - FW Version 2.17+, Blue Series Fan Switch - 1.05+).

Dual Multi-Tap Scene Control

Products Required:

  • Any Red or Blue Series Smart Switch

  • Blue Series Fan/Light Canopy Module

The third method uses Multi-Tap Scene Control to control both the fan's light and fan's motor. Basically, you will have to set up multi-taps to control the dim levels (ie: tap 1x = on to 100%, tap 2x = on to 75%, tap 3x = on to 50%, etc) and the fan speed (ie: tap 1x = on/off, tap 2x = low, tap 3x = medium, tap 4x = high).

  • Pros: This method allows for almost any Inovelli smart switch to work with the Fan/Light Canopy Module.

  • Cons: Multi-Tap Scene Control will not work if your hub goes offline. In addition, the user experience for dimming is not optimal (ie: there's no real-time dimming, it has to be done via multi-taps).

Fan/Light Canopy Module + Smart Switch Using SmartThings

Below we will go into the setup instructions for the three methods listed above using your SmartThings hub. This assumes you have both the Fan/Light Canopy Module and your Inovelli Blue Series smart switch installed.

Method #1: Zigbee Binding + Multi-Tap Scene Control

REMEMBER: Only Blue Series Switches support this method. If you have a Blue Series 2-1 that is on Firmware Version 2.17+ or a Blue Series Fan Switch that is on Firmware Version 1.05+, then we suggest using the Dual Bindings Method.

Please read this section - Zigbee Binding + Multi-Tap Scene Control - to understand how this method works as well as the pro/cons.

Zigbee Binding

Let's start by setting up your Zigbee Binding. This will be what you want the paddle of your switch to control.

  1. Before we go into setting up the Zigbee Binding, the first thing to do is put your smart switch in either, "Smart Bulb Mode" or "Smart Fan Mode" so that there is constant power to the switch. Please open up the SmartThings App and click on, "Devices"

  2. Next, click on your Inovelli switch (not the fan/light canopy module)

  3. Then click on the three dots at the top right and click on, "Settings"

  4. Scroll to where it says, "52. Smart Bulb Mode" and click on it

  5. Select, "Smart Bulb Mode", then, "OK" and then go back to the device page

  6. Next, we have to get some information from SmartThings in order to set up your Zigbee Bindings. Please head over to: https://account.smartthings.com/tokens/new and click on, "Generate new token"

  7. Enter in a Token Name (you can name it whatever you want), select everything in the sections titled, "Devices" and "Locations" and then click, "Generate Token"

  8. WRITE DOWN THE TOKEN AND SAVE IT!!! You will not be able to access this token again so you want to make sure you have it for future reference. Click on, "Copy token" move to Step 4.

  9. Once you have the token saved in a secure place and copied to your clipboard, please go to the following URL, enter the access token and click, "Submit" (you should see your hub location and the various rooms you've created in the SmartThings app): https://lrmulli.github.io/st/index.html

  10. Find your Fan/Light Canopy Module and click on the, "i"

  11. Locate where it says, "eui" and copy the 16 digit code (Zigbee ID)

  12. Now we'll use the information we just got in steps 1-6 and set up the binding -- with your SmartThings app open, click on, "Devices" at the bottom

  13. Next find your Inovelli smart switch and click on it

  14. Click on the three dots at the top right of the screen and select, "Settings"

  15. Scroll down to the bottom to where you see, "Bind #5 - Format: src_ep/eui/dst_ep"

  16. In this step, we'll set up what you want to control with your paddle. There are two different routes you can take:

    • If you'd like to have your switch paddle control the fan's light, enter in the following: 2/EUI From Step 6/1 (so our example would be: 2/881A14FFFE41F9E9/1) and click, "Save"

    • If you'd like to have your switch paddle control the fan's motor, enter the following: 2/EUI From Step 6/2 (so our example would be: 2/881A14FFFE41F9E9/2) and click, "Save"

  17. Go back to the device page and feel free to test out the Zigbee Binding with your paddle (you should be able to tap the paddle up or down and the light should turn on/off as well as hold up/down on the paddle and the light should dim -- if it does not dim, make sure your Fan/Light Canopy Module and your Inovelli Blue Series switch is set to Dimmer Mode - Parameter 258 - in the Settings)

Multi-Tap Scene Control

Now we'll set up Multi-Tap scene control. This will be what you want the favorites button of your switch to control. In the below steps, we're going to set up the fan to do the following (you can set it up however you want and have 7 different buttons to choose from):

  • Tap 1x = Turns Fan on to the last speed it was on or Off

  • Tap 2x = Turns Fan on to Low

  • Tap 3x = Turns Fan on to Medium

  • Tap 4x = Turns Fan on to High

NOTE: If you want to control the light portion from the favorites button, we suggest something like this (you can follow the steps below, but rather than selecting the fan portion in Step 9, select the Light portion):

  • Tap 1x = Turns Light on to the last dim level it was on or Off

  • Tap 2x = Turns Light on to 100%

  • Tap 3x = Turns Light on to 75%

  • Tap 4x = Turns Light on to 50%

  • Tap 5x = Turns Light on to 25%

Please follow the steps below:

  1. Click on the, "Routines" tab at the bottom

  2. Click on the, "+" button at the top of the screen

  3. Under the, "If" section, click on the, "+ Add what will trigger this routine" button

  4. Click on, "Device status" and find your Inovelli Blue Series Switch to click on

  5. To setup the fan turning on/off by tapping once, scroll to the section that says, "Config Button" and click on, "Pressed" followed by, "Done"

  6. Under the, "Then" section, click on the, "+ Add what this routine will do" button

  7. Click on, "Control devices"

  8. Select the Fan/Light Canopy Module and click, "Next"

  9. Since we want the fan to turn on to the last level when we turn it on, or have it turn off, select, "Turn on or turn off" and then, "Done"

  10. Ensure everything looks correct and then click, "Save"

  11. Feel free to rename it if you'd like -- if not, click, "Save"

  12. Test your routine by tapping once on the Favorites Button on your Inovelli Switch and see if your fan's motor turns on/off

  13. To setup a double tap to change the speed to low, repeat Steps 1-4 and on Step 5, select, "Pressed 2 Times". Finally, on Step 9, select, "Turn On", then "Fan Speed" and then, "Low" followed by following Steps 10 and 11.

  14. To setup a triple tap to change the speed to medium, repeat Steps 1-4 and on Step 5, select, "Pressed 3 Times". Finally, on Step 9, select, "Turn On", then "Fan Speed" and then, "Medium" followed by following Steps 10 and 11.

  15. Finally, to setup a quadruple tap to change the speed to high, repeat Steps 1-4 and on Step 5, select, "Pressed 4 Times". Finally, on Step 9, select, "Turn On", then "Fan Speed" and then, "High" followed by following Steps 10 and 11.

Method #2: Dual Zigbee Bindings

REMEMBER: Only Blue Series Switches and certain firmware versions support this method. For the Blue Series 2-1 Switch, it requires Firmware Version 2.17+ and for the Blue Series Fan Switch, it requires Firmware Version 1.05+. If you are unsure what version you have, please click on the, "History" tab on your device page and it should show you what version your switch is.

Please read this section - Dual Zigbee Bindings - to understand how this method works as well as the pro/cons.

In this example, we are going to have the paddle control the light portion of the fan and the config/favorites button control the fan speed, however, you can swap this setup if you'd like and have the paddle control the fan motor and the config/favorites button control the light.

  5. Next, we have to get some information from SmartThings in order to set up your Zigbee Bindings. Please head over to: https://account.smartthings.com/tokens/new and click on, "Generate new token"

  6. Enter in a Token Name (you can name it whatever you want), select everything in the sections titled, "Devices" and "Locations" and then click, "Generate Token"

  7. WRITE DOWN THE TOKEN AND SAVE IT!!! You will not be able to access this token again so you want to make sure you have it for future reference. Click on, "Copy token" move to Step 4.

  8. Once you have the token saved in a secure place and copied to your clipboard, please go to the following URL, enter the access token and click, "Submit" (you should see your hub location and the various rooms you've created in the SmartThings app): https://lrmulli.github.io/st/index.html

  9. Find your Fan/Light Canopy Module and click on the, "i"

  10. Locate where it says, "eui" and copy the 16 digit code (Zigbee ID)

  11. Now we'll use the information we just got in steps 1-6 and set up the binding -- open up your SmartThings App and click on the devices tab

  12. Next find your Inovelli smart switch and click on it

  13. Click on the three dots at the top right of the screen and select, "Settings"

  14. Scroll down to the bottom to where you see, "Bind #5 - Format: src_ep/eui/dst_ep"

  15. In this step, we'll set up what you want to control with your paddle. There are two different routes you can take:

    • If you'd like to have your switch paddle control the fan's light, enter in the following: 2/EUI From Step 6/1 (so our example would be: 2/881A14FFFE41F9E9/1).

    • If you'd like to have your switch paddle control the fan's motor, enter the following: 2/EUI From Step 6/2 (so our example would be: 2/881A14FFFE41F9E9/2).

  16. Now go to where it says, "Bind #6 - Format: src_ep/eui/dst_ep"

  17. In this step, we'll set up what you want to control with the favorites button on your switch. There are two different routes you can take:

    • If you'd like to have your switches favorites button control the fan's light, enter in the following: 3/EUI From Step 6/1 (so our example would be: 3/881A14FFFE41F9E9/1).

    • If you'd like to have your switches favorites button control the fan's motor, enter the following: 3/EUI From Step 6/2 (so our example would be: 3/881A14FFFE41F9E9/2).

  18. The final step is to set how you'd like the fan motor to operate when you press the config/favorites button. Please go to where it says, "130. Fan Control Mode" and select either, "Multi-Tap" or "Cycle"

    • Multi-Tap

      • Tap 1x = Low

      • Tap 2x = Medium

      • Tap 3x = High

      • Hold = Off

    • Cycle
NOTE: Requires Firmware Version 2.17+ for the Blue Series 2-1, and Firmware Version 1.06+ for the Blue Series Fan

      • Tap 1x = Low

      • Tap 1x Again = Medium

      • Tap 1x Again = High

      • Tap 1x Again = Off
