This article describes how the configure a VZM31-SN or VZM35-SN to control a VZM36 fan + light module directly through binding. This method is preferred as it is basically instantaneous and does not require a hub to operate once the configuration is setup.

Creating The Zigbee Groups

  1. First click on "Groups". Name the group something you will remember and click on "Create Group".

  2. Next choose the VZM36 from the drop down menu and specify endpoint 1 (this is the light endpoint). Click "Add to group" to proceed.

Note: If you want to control multiple VZM36 modules from the same switch, you can add multiple devices to the groups we create below. Just select each device with the appropriate endpoint and choose "Add to group" for each one.

  3. Now we do the same thing for the fan endpoint. Select the "Groups" tab, enter the name of the group, and choose "Create group".

  4. On the next screen specify the VZM36 once again in the device drop down. This time choose endpoint 2 (endpoint 2 is the fan endpoint). Then click on "Add to group".

Binding The Switch To The Groups

Next we will be going to configure the VZM31-SN/VZM35-SN that we want to bind to the module. Click on the "Devices" tab and then select the device that you want to control the module. On the device screen click on the "Bind" tab.

Setup the two bindings like in the screenshot below. Bind endpoint 2 of the Inovelli switch to the group with the light module. Bind endpoint 3 of the Inovelli switch to the group with the fan module. Make sure you select both LevelCtrl and OnOff as the clusters and click on the "Bind" button with a little heart on it.

Note: The example in this document is to bind a single switch (paddle to control the light and config button to control the fan). If you want to use two separate switches (one for the light and one for the fan), the endpoint selection will be a little different. Here is a quick reference of how you would accomplish that configuration:

Switch 1 EP2 (LevelControl & OnOff) --> VZM36 EP1 (this will bind the first switch to the light)

Switch 2 EP2 (LevelControl & OnOff) --> VZM36 EP2 (this will bind the second switch to the fan)

Note: Endpoint 3 is only available on firmware 2.17+ of the VZM31-SN and firmware 1.07+ of the VZM35-SN. If you need help installing this firmware version please reach out to customer support.

Using the Configuration Button To Control The Fan

The last step requires the firmware version listed above and is only necessary if you are using the config button to control the fan.

We need to go back into the Device screen for the VZM31-SN (or VZM35-SN) and need to click on the "Exposes" tab. Scroll down until you find the setting "FanControlMode".

Choose which version you want to use based on this description:

1 - Multi-Tap. 1x tap the config to turn the fan to low, 2x for medium, 3x for high, and hold the config button down for off.

2 - Cycle. Each tap of the config button will cycle through the fan speeds like you are pulling the pull string of the fan. First low, then medium, high, off, and then back to low.
