DISCLAIMER: You may notice there are a lot of over-used keywords or phrases as well as English that seems a little off. This is because these articles are used to feed our AI Robot (Ira) and she needs the data to be structured in a certain way.

REMINDER: This switch is only to be used to control AC Motor exhaust and ceiling fans. Do not use the switches on any sort of lighting load or DC Motor.

IMPORTANT: Before installing your fan switch, please ensure the fan motor is set to high speed. If you notice that after you install your fan switch the speeds are not as fast as they were prior to installing your switch, it's likely that the motor was not on high (please adjust if you find this is the case).

NOTICE: You may notice that there is a, "Max Speed" level inside of your app. This is a bug inside the driver that we have no control over. There is no, "Max Speed", so please ignore.

This is the digital setup instructions for the Blue Series Smart Fan Switch (Ceiling or Exhaust) on the SmartThings platform.

Advanced Feature Setup

This switch is packed with features and most of them come directly from this community. They've been debated back and forth, added to wishlists, and talked about over the course of 4+ years (as this switch builds on our Red Series lineup).

Below we will provide a link to all the parameters and show you how to change them from within SmartThings and then we'll go into some of the advanced features and explain how to set them up in SmartThings.

Parameter Explanations

You will need to install an Edge Driver prior to accessing any of these features from within the app. Instructions can be found here: Edge Driver Installation

A parameter is a setting within the switch firmware that allows you to change how the switch operates. For example, you want to change how fast your fan turns on, the color of the LED bar, minimum speed level and much more -- all with a few clicks within the app.

To access your parameters, please follow the steps below:

  1. Open your SmartThings App and go to the, "Devices" tab

  2. Find your Blue Series Fan Switch and click on it

  3. Click on the three dots at the top right and select, "Settings"

  4. From here, you can scroll down, locate and change the various parameters on the switch

For a list of the most up-to-date parameters and the firmware version they are associated with, please visit the Blue Series Fan Switch Parameter Page

Animated Notifications

Animated notifications are used when you want to have a visual cue on your LED bar notify you of a certain event. A few examples would be:

  • LED Bar pulses purple if your garage door is left open past 9pm

  • LED Bar chases red if your front door is unlocked

  • LED Bar fast blinks orange if a door is opened at night time

These notifications are accomplished by using, "Routines" within the SmartThings App.

For more information about Animated Notifications as well as some examples of how to set them up, please visit the following article: Setting Up Animated Notifications • SmartThings

Scene Control

Scene control, in this context, refers to activating a scene from your light switch via a tap sequence (ie: double-tap, triple-tap, favorites button, etc). This is not to be confused with setting up scenes in your SmartThings app, which is different.

SmartThings Scene vs Inovelli Scene

To learn how to setup multi-tap scene control, please visit the following article: Setting Up Multi-Tap Scene Control • SmartThings

Smart Fan Mode

Smart Fan Mode is a special mode that allows you to use your Inovelli smart switch to control smart fans. Rather than cutting power to your smart fan, Smart Fan Mode tells the switch to send a digital signal to your fan or your hub to turn on/off or change speeds.

There are a few different methods we can use to accomplish setting up your switch to work with smart fans and it will depend on the type of a smart fan you have. If you have a Zigbee fan, you can use either Zigbee Bindings and/or Multi-Tap Scene Control. If you have anything other than Zigbee (which is most likely the case), you'll need to use Multi-Tap Scene Control.

Please see the diagram below to better illustrate the differences between Zigbee Bindings and Multi-Tap Scene Control.

Our recommendation is to use Zigbee Bindings whenever you can as it provides the best user experience in terms of speed and also it best mimics a normal, "dumb" switch and fan. However, we also are not aware of any Zigbee fans out there at the moment.

Please ensure your fan can also connect to SmartThings.

Zigbee Binding

Zigbee binding is when two or more Zigbee products communicate directly with one another without the need to communicate with a hub. There are two main benefits of utilizing Zigbee binding: speed & local control.

From a speed standpoint, cutting out the middle-man (hub) can save precious milliseconds or even seconds depending on your cloud and/or processing power off your hub. Whereas from a local control standpoint, if your hub goes does down and cannot communicate, your products can still talk to each other.

To setup Zigbee Binding with your SmartThings Hub, please see this article: Setting Up Zigbee Bindings • SmartThings
